Music, Vocal Coach & Worship Leader

Valerie Parrish holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Choral Music Education from The Florida State University and currently serves as the Choral Director at Horizon West Middle School in Windermere, FL. Valerie is passionate about music education and vocal techniques, always seeking new ways to express and share her love of music with her students. She has served as the Co-Coordinator for the Treble Chorus on the OCPS All-County Honor Chorus Committee for the past three years and has participated in numerous choral festivals, including Florida, Southern Division, and National ACDA events.

Valerie was honored as the 2022-2023 Teacher of the Year at her middle school and recently helped coordinate the 2024 Florida All-State Treble Chorus in Tampa, FL. Born and raised in Orlando, Valerie is committed to giving back to her community by actively contributing as a conductor and clinician. She believes that music has the power to build a community founded on kindness, acceptance, and love.

Teaching chorus and working with vocal students is Valerie’s true passion. Each year, she looks forward to sharing her knowledge of singing and music in joyous and creative ways, both inside and outside the classroom.

Course Description

Beginning Guitar

Students with little or no prior experience will develop fundamental guitar skills and knowledge, including simple and full-strum chords, strumming patterns, playing and singing simple melodies, foundational music theory, guitar parts, and ensemble techniques. They will also explore the careers and music of significant performers across various genres, including pop/rock, jazz, blues, classical, country, bluegrass, and hard rock/metal.

Formal and informal performances may be used to culminate specific instructional goals. Students may be required to attend or participate in rehearsals and performances outside of regular class time to support, enhance, and assess their learning in the classroom.

Beginning Piano

Students with little or no prior experience will develop foundational piano skills and knowledge, including simple chords, rhythmic patterns, playing and singing simple melodies, basic music theory, sight-reading skills, and accompanying techniques. They will also explore the careers and music of influential performers across various genres, including pop/rock, jazz, blues, classical, country, and more.

Formal and informal performances may be used to culminate specific instructional goals. Students may be required to attend or participate in rehearsals and performances outside regular class hours to support, enhance, and assess their learning in the classroom.
